Rare 1st Edition Louisa May Alcott's 1st work May Flowers; from a group of stories originally written Dec 9 1854 for Ellen Emerson, daughter of Ralph Waldo Emerson. Written by Alcott during a period when she was confined to her home due to illness. This 1st separate edition is part of a group of stories from A Garland for Girls (released as 11 books in collection My Girls printed between 1899-1904). It is illustrated with 4 halftone plates. Lovely Book with Green and Gold decorative cover...Quaint child's story of originally published in the 1800's. This is a short story of a group of young Boston Girls, all descendants of the Pilgrims, who aptly call themselves the May Flowers. Their group is a social/book club, but they decide they want to devote their energies to a better cause, helping someone in need. They individually chose a project or person to help and the following spring they will tell the group of their successes. This is the premise of the story. Alcott, in her usual classic style gives each girl's account of the heartbreaking, heartwarming experiences. This story is written for the young and for children so it won't appeal to everyone but if you are an Alcott fan, you will probably like it. It is a classic Victorian morality tale teaching charity for those less fortunate and the betterment of others.

Book cover in very good vintage shape--was protected by paper cover. Scarce Paper Jacket. Book is in good vintage condition for age--almost 130 years old. Green binding with Accents of gold and black on title on spine. Some slight light staining on interior pages (darken aging/foxing) Photography shows some lighting/shadows.
