Stockton avoided the didactic moralizing common to children's stories of the time, instead using clever humor to poke at greed, violence, abuse of power and other human foibles, describing his fantastic characters' adventures in a charming, matter-of-fact way. He was a most delightful humorous author. He wrote many stories for adults and children that are timeless, and his humor, quiet wisdom, and irony are evident in all his writing. In this collection of some of his best fiction, the reader will find ghost stories, sea yarns, romance, tall tales, and fairy tales and "The Casting Away of Mrs. Lecks and Mrs. Aleshire," Stockton's masterpiece. Very pretty shabby chic book...a quaint old fashioned read. Circa 1897--Book is over 100 years old. It's such a nice book to hold and display--lovely to read and lovely to add to your decor. Great Vintage Library Decor...wonderful bookshelf material. Pretty Decorative graphic cover. by Margaret Armstrong. Margaret Armstrong was an artist who was considered to be the most productive and accomplished American book designer of the 1890's thru the early 1900's. Her work was highly sought after and can be seen on many ornate volumes of the early 1900's. Decorative Cover blue cloth/age faded to purple tone stamped in gray and gilt--cover art attributed to Margaret Armstrong. Illustrated by Peter Newell, W.T. Smedley, Frank O. Small, Alice Barber Stephens, and E.W. Kemble. 16 illustrations Binding is tight. Decorative artwork on cover illustrating "storyteller's pack with manuscripts" and floral Art Nouveau styling with gold accents. Gold title on spine with coordinating decoration as front. Pages have some browning/foxing/darkening/age staining. Light wear on spine back with slight loosening ripple on back cover. Book is over 100 years old. Book is in very good shape for age and has been taken care of--time has treated it well. Hand cut pages with gold on top edges of pages Back cover and spine has some sun fading.
