Trilby, novel by George du Maurier, published in 1895. The novel tells the story of Trilby O’Ferrall, an artist’s model in Paris, who falls under the spell of the compelling Svengali, a musician who trains her voice through hypnosis and turns her into a singing star. The pair travel throughout Europe on successful concert tours, Trilby as La Svengali, the famous singer, and Svengali as the accompanying orchestra conductor. When Svengali falls ill and dies, the spell is broken, and Trilby loses her voice. The story of Trilby’s total subjugation to Svengali has passed into the realm of popular mythology. Trilby is a novel by George du Maurier and one of the most popular novels of its time. Published serially in Harper's Monthly from January to August 1894, it was published in book form on 8 September 1895 and sold 200,000 copies in the United States alone. Trilby is set in the 1850s in an idyllic bohemian Paris. Lightly toned grey/beige cloth boards--with attractive beige/olive tone and gilt decorations of a spider and web with a heart to the front board and spine. An altogether very attractive copy from the first "Du Maurier". George Du Maurier was famous as a cartoonist for Punch Magazine and this volume has extensive illustrations. A first print copy published immediately after the original magazine issues from Harper. George Du Maurier was the Grandfather of Daphne Du Maurier and the grandfather of grandsons that were the inspiration for the "lost boys" of Peter Pan.
