Gift inscription penciled in front "To a Real Friend and To the Finest Girl on this Great Wide World Miss Olive May F.W.S. 1928 (an older book volume re gifted in 1928) Binding in good condition with some signs of wear--l"bumps" wear to corners and spine edges and marbled cover from shelf. Francis Turner Palgrave, Eleanor Fortescue-Brickdale (illustrator). selected and arranged with notes by. Robert Burns, Lord Byron, William Cowper, Thomas Gray, Robert Herrick, Charles Lamb, John Milton, Sir Walter Scott, William Shakespeare, William Wordsworth, Percy Bysshe Shelley, et al.
There are twelve tissue guarded full colour plates by Eleanor Fortescue-Brickdale. Francis Turner Palgrave (28 September 1824 - 24 October 1897) was a British critic, anthologist and poet. Palgrave's principal contribution to the development of literary taste was contained in his Golden Treasury of English Songs and Lyrics (1861), an anthology of the best poetry in the language constructed upon a plan sound and spacious, and followed out with a delicacy of feeling which could scarcely be surpassed. Eleanor Fortescue-Brickdale (1872-1945) was an accomplished painter, illustrator and designer whose artistic life bridged the Victorian and modern worlds. Her work was much influenced by the Pre-Raphaelite artists whose love of detail, colour, symbolism, storytelling and nature was so hugely influential on mid Victorian Britain. Eleanor's own work carried the Pre-Raphaelite style forward into the 20th century. Indeed she became known as 'the last Pre-Raphaelite'. Despite her huge popularity in her own time, Eleanor's work has been neglected since her death in 1945.
