Hat was found at an estate sale of a member of one of Kansas City's early society leaders. "Back in the day" Kansas City was considered one of the major fashion capitals west of the Mississippi and several of the leading manufacturers and retail stores outside of New York were based in Kansas City.
It has the classic hat style that was known as a profile/cloche/toque/eggshell hat. A style that a major Designer of the 1950's was very fond of and used in his new looking fashions. After the War, Fashion Style celebrated women and the liberation from the austerity of war. It has a tailored look with a touch of femininity. Women were looking for new & better times in the years to come. They were working outside the home and needed a tailored ensemble but didn't want to lose their feminine appeal. It's classic styling also carries on the tradition of the 1920's-1930's--a time when women were expressing themselves in a modern way.
Hat was originally purchased at Woolf Brothers one of Kansas City's iconic department stores and one of the oldest retail stores in the country. Their Wichita store is on the National Register of Historic Places. Woolf Brothers was established in 1865 as shirt makers in Fort Leavenworth KS and a few of their famous clients were Bat Masterson, Wild Bill Hickok, Buffalo Bill Cody and Wm Jennings Bryant. They moved their story to Kansas City in the 1880s. After WWI, Woolf Brothers offered Women's clothing. With the advent of the automobile, they moved to the Country Club Plaza, Kansas City's iconic shopping district-one of the Nation's 1st shopping destinations. Woolf Brothers set the style for fashion throughout the Midwest. Herbert Woolf, the founder's son's hobby was raising racing horses and cattle. His Woolford Farms was the home of Lawrin--the 1938 Kentucky Derby winner and his herd was purchased by William Randolph Hurst to populate the pastures of his San Simeon Ranch.
