Details: circa 1940's-1950's Black Wool with black jersey knit hat band ties. Asymetrical brim with wider brim at wearer's left. Circumference approx 20-21 Hat sits at angle on back, on top of head or side of head as desired. Approx. 7 X 7 1/2" measured inside of hat. Top of crown approx. 4 1/2" X 5" across and front to back Approx. 3" high crown, Brim Approx. 2" on left and approx. 1 3/4" on right Approx. 3" front center Approx. 4" crown to corner of brim on right and approx. 5' crown to corner of brim on left. The style of this hat suggests that it is a design style inspired by Robert Dudley. He was a New York Based Designer whose works had been produced at the Massachusetts Merrimac Hat Factory in the 1940's-1950's. Mr Dudley was a very intriguing figure who studied at the Eastman School of Music intent on embarking on a career in the theater. He decided to pursue a career in Millinery after refurbishing an old wool hat for a friend. His large clientele included many theater and society figures and he designed several hats for films including "Rebecca". During the 1940's and 1950's he operated the Chez Robert salon at Saks Fifth Avenue and his own shop Robert Dudley originals on the East Side of Manhattan. Later in Life Mr Dudley became an Interior designer. His hat designs were known for a bit of the theatrical and architectural styling.
This hat was purchased at a well to do society family's estate.
