The Vicar of Wakefield a classic tale by Oliver Goldsmith This book is presented in"vignettes". This novel was a very popular book of the Regency Victorian era. It was an exciting novel for it's time exploring the exploits of the Primrose family--much like a soap opera of it's time. Nice book for your bookshelf or side table; charmingly quaint shabby chic decor...a melodramatic tale with many twists and turns.
Very pretty shabby chic book with intriguing story line and plot...a quaint old fashioned read.
It's such a nice book to hold and browse through as it is to read it's classic tale of society in a small village in England --lovely to read and lovely to add to your decor. There is nothing like reading a quaint classic. This volume was a loved book well taken care of with it's original paper dust jacket. It would be a perfect gift for the romantically inclined person in your life. Oliver Goldsmith's hugely successful novel of 1766 remained for generations one of the most highly regarded and beloved works of eighteenth-century fiction. It depicts the fall and rise of the Primrose family, presided over by the benevolent vicar, the narrator of a fairy-tale plot of impersonation and deception, the abduction of a beautiful heroine and the machinations of an aristocratic villain. By turns comic and sentimental, the novel's popularity owes much to its recognizable depiction of domestic life and loving family relationships. The main virtue of this book is its antiquity. It was written from 1761 to 1762 and published in 1766. It was one of the most popular and widely read 18th-century novels among Victorians. The novel claims the distinction of being referenced in the writings of many other nineteenth century writers.
The novel is mentioned in George Eliot's Middlemarch, Stendhal's The Life of Henry Brulard, Arthur Schopenhauer's "The Art of Controversy", Jane Austen's Emma, Charles Dickens' A Tale of Two Cities and David Copperfield, Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, Sarah Grand's The Heavenly Twins, Charlotte Brontë's The Professor and Villette, Louisa May Alcott's Little Women and in Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's The Sorrows of Young Werther, as well as his Dichtung und Wahrheit. I think these references show how widely this book was read during the nineteenth century. (from GoodReads)
