STORY SYNOPSIS: DR. ZHIVAGO is the epic novel of Russia in the throes of revolution and one of the greatest love stories ever told. Yuri Zhivago, physician and poet, wrestles with the new order and confronts the changes cruel experience has made in him and the anguish of being torn between the love of two women. Boris Pasternak was awarded the Nobel prize for Literature Lifetime Achievement Award in 1958 (the year of publication of DR. ZHIVAGO, but declined the prize.) The novel was the basis of the beloved 1965 movie by David Lean, staring Omar Sharif and Julie Christie. which won five Academy Awards, including Best Picture. This epic tale about the effects of the Russian Revolution and its aftermath on a bourgeois family was not published in the Soviet Union until 1987. One of the results of its publication in the West was Pasternak's complete rejection by Soviet authorities; when he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1958 he was compelled to decline it. The book quickly became an international best-seller.
